How to find web design clients on WhatsApp

By ULeads team · Published · 6 min read

Message local businesses that have no website but a phone on their Google listing — in our data 96% of listings show one, and in much of the world that number is on WhatsApp. Send one short message built on a fact from their listing, follow up twice a few days apart, then stop. Write each message for that business: identical texts to many strangers get numbers blocked.

Why WhatsApp instead of email?

Most small local businesses don't publish an email address, but almost all publish a phone number, and owners read WhatsApp between customers. In countries such as Brazil, India, Indonesia and much of Europe it is how customers already reach them. A message there is read in minutes; a cold email to a generic inbox, if there is one, often isn't.

Which businesses should you message?

  • No website, a phone number on the listing, and good reviews: demand without a place to send it.
  • Only an Instagram or Facebook page as their “website” — see how to sell to Instagram-only businesses.
  • Trades that live off the phone: barbers, salons, plumbers, cafés, bakeries, repair shops.

What does a good first message look like?

“Hi! I came across John's Plumbing on Google Maps — 4.8 stars from 212 reviews, but no website, so people searching for plumbers in Springfield can't see your prices or get in touch online. I build simple websites for local businesses. Can I send you a free one-page mockup?” One true fact, what you do, one question that is easy to say yes to. No links, no attachments, no price in the first message.

The free message generator writes this for a business you describe; ULeads writes it for every business it finds and opens WhatsApp with the text ready.

When should you follow up?

Four messages, then stop
WhenMessageWhat it does
Day 1First messageOne fact from their listing, what you do, one easy question
Day 3–4Follow-upOne line pointing back to the first, repeating the free offer
Day 8–10Last trySays it is the last message and leaves the door open
After a quoteAfter proposalAsks for a decision and offers a smaller first step

How do you avoid getting blocked?

  • Use WhatsApp Business on its own number, with your name, photo and a portfolio link in the profile.
  • Write each message for that business. The same text to many strangers is what gets reported.
  • Start slowly with a new number and message during their working hours, in their language.
  • Stop when someone says no, and never add people to groups or broadcast lists without asking.

Common questions

Is it OK to message a business on WhatsApp without knowing them?

A short, specific message to a number the business publishes for customers is usually fine, the same as a phone call. Check the rules where you and the business are, write one message at a time, and stop at once if they ask you to.

Should I use WhatsApp Business or my personal number?

WhatsApp Business on a separate number: a profile with your name, a link to your portfolio and opening hours looks like a real business, and your personal chats stay separate.

How many businesses can I message a day?

Few enough that every message is written for that business — a few dozen at most for a new number. The same text sent to many strangers is what gets numbers reported and blocked.

ULeads searches a city and a trade on Google Maps, keeps going past the first page until it finds real prospects, and ranks every business by how weak its online presence is.
